Catherine Saiki

Catherine Saiki photo Catherine Saiki’s abstract paintings are inspired by the industrial city - from the steel detritus left in the wake of urban development to the rusty patina of an ever-changing landscape. Saiki documents and reassembles these found moments through the textures and colors of her paintings.

Each work begins with loose and gestural marks in ink and graphite to the naked canvas. Next, Catherine applies several layers of transparent oil paint, employing a range of reds, steel grays and creamy whites. Every layer of color deepens the surface and shows the history of the painting. As abstract and organic forms emerge, the composition and textures reference elements of a reconstructed urban landscape.

In addition to showing her work at HANG ART, Catherine has exhibited in numerous venues in the Bay Area and Southern California.
