Jeff Loehmann photo Jeff Loehmann's work is informed by the basic elements of physics: time, force, and chance. Whether working with steel, paper, wood, or glass, he is interested in exploring the inherent properties (and hidden potential) of his materials. Though he attempts to push past the limitations of these media, he also understands that at some point he must relinquish control.

Jeff looks to the natural world for inspiration. His "drawings," which are made by pressing a hot branding iron to paper, use organic shapes developed in his experiments with ink on paper. He sees the brands as metaphors for the process of entropy: Through an exchange of energy, they leave the paper transformed.

In his sculptural work, Jeff compresses simple geometric forms so that the various shapes alter one another and become interdependent. The resulting sculptures emerge directly from the conditions and forces imposed upon them. Jeff Loehmann studied Fine Arts and Sculpture at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York and received his master's degree in Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 2001. He is currently the director of the fabrication shop at the architectural firm Lundberg Design. He has shown his artwork locally at Spunderground Gallery and Galeria de la Raza, and nationally at galleries in Michigan, Connecticut, and New York.
