Planes and Formations Online Exhibition

Exhibition Dates: August 16 to 22, 2018

Planes and Formations focuses on recurrent formal features throughout Catherine Palmer's and Darren Sears’s paintings. In her large oil canvases, Palmer recruits the picture-plane’s flatness for representing the way San Francisco’s architectural and infrastructural planning proliferates planes. Stretches of roads and facades of skyscrapers become almost abstract monochromatic surfaces. Sears invests the flatness of maps, building plans and photographs with new depth and angularity by collaging them together in paintings. Similar to Palmer's observation that fog and trees introduce volume and their own agency into the city’s tightly ordered space, Sears captures how geology and vegetation spontaneously form and deform amidst human organizational activity, like biology or city planning. His paintings are their own surreal formations of the visual fragments of those disciplines.
